As a millennial, I have been asked multiple times why I work for a company that sells gold panning kits. The answer doesn't just lie in the quality of the product or my belief in the owner and inventor, Mark Peterson, but in much more than that. 

I've come to find that a significant part of human nature lies in wanting to work hard, while also wanting to take a break from working TOO hard. For some people, that temporary escape from "busy" is a vacation somewhere, and to others, it may be watching a favorite football team on Sundays. Labor Day Weekend is nearly upon us, which we hope means more than a lot of car traffic for you. Though some people plan way out in advance for the weekend, here are some of our last-minute recommendations on the things you may want to be doing this Labor Day Weekend.

1. Camping

This one may seem like a no-brainer, but you'd be surprised how many people decide not to go camping for Labor Day. Camping helps rejuvenate the mind and body, and we're big fans of it here. It may be worth trying a less crowded area where you can enjoy some open space and hopefully some beautiful weather!

2. Fishing

If you live near or are planning on traveling in an area where there's water, be sure to bring a fishing pole (and a license)! While there's proven studies showing how fishing can help relieve stress, it's also a very enjoyable activity to share with a friend or family member. Besides, catching a fish you're able to keep makes for a great meal as well.

3. Paddleboarding and/or Canoeing

If you're not necessarily into fishing but still love the water, consider paddleboarding or canoeing for a great Labor Day Weekend activity. Both are extremely healthy activities and can give you a completely different perspective of the surrounding area. Be sure to wear a life jacket though, that's important!

4. Hiking

If you're lucky enough to live near a place where you can go hiking, we highly encourage it this weekend. Hiking is by far one of our most enjoyable activities. Though there are many different elevations across the country, we encourage anyone who is within distance of a small hill or large mountain to get up there, explore the unknown and feel accomplished.

5. Gold Panning

Looking for some fun activities to enjoy during your summer excursions outdoors? Here are 5 fun activities the entire family can enjoy this summer.

1. Giant Jenga

Giant jenga is jenga on an entirely different level, literally. 

• Players take turns removing one block at a time from a total of 54 pieces.
• When a block is removed, a player must balance it on top of the tower, creating a progressively taller, yet unstable, structure. 
• The moment the whole thing comes tumbling down, the last person to pick out a block loses.

2. Glow In The Dark Bocce Ball

Similar to lawn bowling, this form of bocce ball can be played 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In this version of bocce, there are 2 balls per team made of a different color to distinguish the balls. 

• Bocce is played with eight large balls and one smaller target or object ball called a pallina.
• Each team takes a turn. One point is given for each bocce ball that is closer to the pallino than the opposing team's bocce balls.
• The pallino distance marker can be used to determine which balls are closer.
• The game continues until 12 points have been scored or to pre-determined points set by the players before the game starts.

3. Water Balloon Dodge Ball

Think dodgeball without as much pain but still as much glory! You know the rules - 

• All youth should stand at one end of the playing area behind some cones or other items dictating boundaries.
• When you say go, they have to run to the other end while you throw water balloons at them.
• If they get hit by a balloon before reaching the other end, they’re out.
• Once all remaining players are lined up the other side, say go and have them run back while you continue throwing water balloons at them.

4. Nature Tic-Tac-Toe

Want to play a special game of tic-tac-toe meant for the outdoors? Here's what to do - 

• Collect twigs, sticks, driftwood and small round pebbles or stones. You will need at least four sticks of around the same length, several smaller sticks (around ten smaller sticks, each about three inches in length), and around ten pebbles or stones.
• Arrange the four long sticks in a tic-tac-toe grid pattern.
• Use twist ties to attach the sticks together at the four places where they intersect in the grid. Wrap one twist tie around each intersection point.
• For the tic-tac-toe Xs, cross two smaller same-size sticks in an ‘X’ pattern and attach them together with a twist tie, repeating to create several more Xs. 
• If you use sticks for Xs, try using plain pebbles as Os. Now you're ready to play tic-tac-toe.

5. Gold Panning

Gold panning isn't as difficult as it looks. With a Gold Rush Nugget Bucket, it only requires a few simple steps - 

• Scoop in dirt
• Pour in water
• Let material concentrate in your plastic concentration bowl
• Dump the material in your gold pan and start panning for gold!
